Nigeria has indeed changed a lot. This probably started like 5 to 10 years ago when social media became a huge part of Nigerian society. Now, every year, Nigerians just somehow come up with a slogan that are then included into the country’s vocabulary. In 2023, we were all chanting “dey play” and now in 2024, we have switched to “No gree for anybody.” 

No gree for anybody is a way to say – do not allow yourself to be bullied/defeated or do not be intimidated. This slogan started in December 2023, and in a few days, people began using it on different social media platforms from Twitter to Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and more. WhatsApp is the most used app in Nigeria, and many people posted it on their statuses too, further increasing the popularity of the slogan. 

On January 10/11th, 2024, after the slogan became popular all over Nigeria, the police came out to warn Nigerians against using it. According to the police, the slogan could trigger a crisis in the country especially when people implement what it means. This immediately caused an outrage all over the country and citizens slammed the police for claiming that a simple slogan could cause any problem. Many Nigerians were also worried that this could be an attack on free speech. 

Surprisingly, after a few hours of the police statement, the Nigerian Military joined the trend and posted – “No Gree For Terrorists, Criminals in 2024.” This became the talk of the social media space as it seemed to many like a mockery of the statement of the police.
